Your help has been invaluable in making sure the Memorial was finished. In particular the many wonderful people who have been on our committee over the years since the charity’s inception in 2007. All have worked incredibly hard, with no salary or expenses at all. They are too many to list here, but have been a wonderful help and support to honorary secretary Sandra Scotting since the charity was first set up.

We should also like to thank Kofi Appiah, who was the first ever Mayor of Tower Hamlets to campaign to have a plaque placed over the stairs on the 50th anniversary in 1993. He organised a special Memorial Service and was able to install the plaque above the entrance stairs of Bethnal Green tube station where everyone died. Although the plaque was later lost by TFL it turned up at an auction house in Kent and was fortunately spotted by the family of one of the victims, Ethel Grover, and handed to the charity to raise funds. A replacement plaque was eventually put above the stairs, but it is difficult to read nowadays. This is just one of the reasons why we needed a fitting Memorial to be built next door to where the tragedy occurred. One that could not be lost or moved.

We also wish to thank the many people who have helped and contributed to the building of the Memorial in so many different ways. They are not listed in any particular order, but all have made a substantial contribution to the Stairway to Heaven Memorial project. The building work would not have started without their help.

Some have given their time or help pro bono, others at cost or low price, and of course many more people have given donations. We will be adding to this list from time to time as we work through our records, but will be unable to list every single person that has donated to the funds as there is not enough room. Children have even given their pocket money, school classes have organised fund-raising events, local businesses and people have regularly made donations and every contribution, however small, has been very much appreciated and we thank every single person very much that has helped us to complete the memorial project. Those that have sponsored conicals are listed on a separate ‘conical’ page. The following have made substantial contributions in one way or another.

London Borough of Tower Hamlets – including Mayor Lutfur Rahman, Mayor John Biggs, and all the local councillors who have undertaken events to help us raise funds and given their time and support over the last 11 years. Also, to local MP Rushanara Ali who has been a huge support and help to us throughout our project.

THE PROJECT TEAM:

ARCHITECT & LEAD CONSULTANT: Harry Paticas MBE of Arboreal Architecture Ltd (Architect & originator)
MAIN CONTRACTOR: CONISTON LIMITED
QUANTITY SURVEYOR: Davis Langdon/Aecom
STRUCTURAL ENGINEER: The Morton Partnership
PRECAST CONCRETE ENGINEER: Waldeck
SERVICES ENGINEER: Max Fordham
TYPOGRAPHER: Atelier Dreibholz
CDM CO-ORDINATOR: PFB Consult
LEGAL SERVICES (Pro Bono): Mayer Brown LLP
ACCESS CONSULTANT: Access=Design
PARTY WALL: Anstey Horne

SUPPLIERS:

Aggregate Industries
BBS Granite Concepts
Brill & Co
Coniston Limited (Main contractor)
Echosheet
Falcon
Greenoak Carpentry Company
Hotchkiss
J.B.
